JJ
Giles is an author of erotic literature and also
writes as Lady Midnight.
As JJ Giles, I write very intense psycho-sexual
BDSM in various contexts like contemporary, such
as The Mistress and The Mouse and Second Sin. But
the historical aspects of the reign of Charlemagne,
the Renaissance and the Inquisition are not to be
forgotten in Lady Dragon. All of these works are
mainstream in scope, and plot-driven, the D/s relationships
merely assumed.
Lady Midnight writes BDSM novels with
the focus on developing and maintaining D/s relationships.
Whether we want them to or not, relationships are
forged, evolve and dissolve no matter the model.
These are character-driven novels with less intricacy
of plot, less characterization and less metaphor,
but still very much anchored in sado- and maso-eroticism.
Q. How long have you been
writing erotica?
JJ Giles - Fifteen years
already! Inspired by a frustrating marriage, and
even more aggravating in-laws, I escaped into writing
and found the love of my life. After all of that,
they proved to be a wonderful resource for the antagonists.
Q. Are there
any central themes and philosophies that run through
your works?
JJ Giles - All of my work
is from a perspective within the BDSM culture whether
it’s FemDomme, MaleDom, sub, gay, straight or bisexual.
It’s always about the relationships forged within
a D/s paradigm, the many things that can go wrong,
and the wonderful things that last a lifetime.
Q. How much of your characters spring out of real
life experiences or people you’ve known?
JJ Giles – All of them. When I
start a new book, any given character might be an
amalgamation of several people I know until that
character becomes, at least in my mind, an individual,
and takes on a life of its own. By nature, I’m a
people watcher and can find persons of interest
everywhere I go. Not only physical attributes, but
facial expressions, tics, thought processes and
patterns of speech never go unnoticed. Settings
often reflect a character’s emotional state, or
the action of the scene.
Q. How much of yourself is in your characters?
JJ Giles – All of me – again,
parceled out in little bits to create the comedy
or drama where needed. But then there’s a lot of
real life around here to draw upon.
Q. Your work is very diverse by nature but always
erotic. From hot stroke like Enslaved to more contemporary
pieces like The Mistress and The Mouse, historical/paranormals
in Lady Dragon, even murder mysteries of Puss in
Boots, and romance in MiLady’s School For Girls.
Do you approach any of these differently? Is any
one genre more challenging or rewarding for you?
JJ Giles – The Order of
Von Tratten, of which Lady Dragon is the first in
the series, is an historical/paranormal stretching
back to the reign of Charlemagne. The years of research
I did on the Renaissance, the Carolingian Empire,
the Courts of Europe, daily life, the witch trials,
and the early organization of what we now refer
to as the BDSM Lifestyle and Culture were totally
inspiring.
The Mistress and The Mouse juxtaposes cultural
divides with the Abernathy Family, descendants of
an assassinated president against Mistress Morgan,
a sex therapist by day and a Dominatrix by night.
This is a classic soap opera; think Dallas or Falcon
Crest on steroids.
Puss in Boots is written in the tradition
of 50’s Film Noir. In my version, the Femme Fatale
is the daughter of a schizophrenic suicide victim,
the hero an impotent slave, and the bad guy is a
lawyer, who also happens to be The Alphabet Murderer,
and her brother.
MiLady’s School For Girls begins with the
premise that “all invertebrates are inherently submissive
until someone allows them to participate,” and until
they’re trained, male or female, they will pay attention.
A Pro-Domme, She’s on the job. When Lord Arthur
summons her particular talents, little does She
know she’s chasing a murderess, and rescuing a lover.
Enslaved is my latest release – a male
dom piece. But in the end, it’s all about the tits.
And you’d like me to pick a genre? It’s
the soap opera that offers the most room to move
through plot lines, with sub plots tangled up under
the covers in the dark. Very few limitations. But
I’m also an incurable romantic; those pieces are
inspired by friends and lovers. The paranormal within
the historical is a study in self-discipline and
focus.
Q. What can we expect from Lady Midnight and JJ
Giles in the future?
JJ Giles - Oh, we’ll find
something to get into. The sequel to Enslaved is
on the board now, but it’s Mistress Morgan who’s
kicking at the closet door with another story to
tell. It seems she’s decided to take that job at
Abernathy Acquisitions, Inc, to keep all of the
executive’s little submissives in operating order.
Oh no, Free Association coming up…
My favorite fantasy dinner guests would
be…I think for drinks we’ll start with Andy Warhol
and a little insight into the human psyche. For
appetizers, definitely Gore Vidal, one of my favorites.
But for the main course, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin,
and Thomas Jefferson, brilliant men with three different
philosophies on what it means to swim against the
tide. For dessert, Jimi Morrison, our American Poet.
If I could live in any time it would be…The
21st century isn’t so bad after all. I can’t imagine
practicing my craft by scribbling on little scraps
of paper…in a prison cell like Thomas Paine and
the Marquis de Sade. That would suck!
Q. OK, OK we’re hooked! Where can we find your books?
A. Thank you. One can find
my works, as JJ Giles or Lady Midnight at the amazon,
Barnes & nobles, and borders .com web retail
sites. They’re also available at other on-line retailers.
Of course if someone wanted a personally autographed
copy, and maybe even a picture of Lady Midnight,
they would need to order directly through my publisher
www.loveyoudivine.com.
Q. Thank you for your time. Would you be willing
to chat again, perhaps with the release of your
next book?
A. Love to.
